2001 was lit: Britney Spears released Britney and gave her iconic “Slave 4 U” performance at the VMA’s, I was somewhere in the midwest on a computer playing Neopets at 1am, and the pop culture theme was Red & Wild future/millennium. Fashion was gaudy, hairstyles were tragic, George W. Bush was in his first year, yet there was a silver lining: music, especially music videos. Jessica Simpson may have just been a ditsy, big-titted, country girl with a heart of gold…
and that’s why we love her.
Today’s throwback comes from one of my favorite “teen pop” pop stars of her era, Jessica Simpson. “Irresistible” was the lead single of her second studio album of the same name, which unfortunately did not fare well on the charts for her nor was it received well by critics, oops.
Home girl had to try and keep up with the likes of Ms. Britney Jean Spears and contemporaries like Willa Ford, so the video pulled all of the stops, henny, all seven fucking stops!
First and foremost, I need that wig and pretty much every outfit from the video. Also, the stylization, product placement, and vibe is quintessential early 2000’s (drool). We really thought we were going places, instead everyone just got more depressed and fatter. I digress! Jessica is letting everyone, especially Nick Lachey, have it. She’s got her little Sunday school hip-hop choreography on full display, and she and all her friends don’t care how bad that medical helicopter needs to land, they’re werking.
I miss videos like this. I miss the “teen pop” craze. I miss my god damn Neopets.
