Throwback: Janet – Doesn’t Really Matter

The year was 2001, and I was just a wee little gayby riding around in my mom’s super gay Mazda Miata (that she won in the divorce), bumping some fierce cassettes. One of those cassettes was Ms. Janet Jackson‘s All For Youand a particular song sticks out in my mind: “Doesn’t Really Matter“.

The song was originally released in May 2000, as the lead single off of The Nutty Professor 2 soundtrack, where it spent 3 weeks at number one, CMON JANET! It was included in Janet‘s 2001 masterpiece All For You, a year later, where it got the single treatment again and a video, directed by Joseph Kahn.

The song is a feel good BOP that was inspired by her divorce from René Elizondo, that saw Janet excited about dating again and exploring herself intimately. Passion and romance are major themes on this album which sees Janet feeling flirty and giving us some upbeat jams; also its always refreshing seeing an artist glow and bask in the spotlight after battling with serious issues and darkness.

The video is a busy and delightful future affair full of product placement, glam, and how I actually get ready every morning. The whole thing is preeeeeeeetty fucking kawaii. Watch and listen below:
