“Welcome To New York”: A Subsidiary of Hell

Boom…Boom…Boom, the song opens with a dramatic bassline and then fires out some 80’s synth goodness. Taylor Swift released “Welcome To New York” on iTunes, technically today, for the countdown to 1989. During an interview, Swift said of the song, “I wanted to start the album with this song…I dreamt about moving to New York, I obsessed about moving to New York, and then I did it.” Did she do the Big Apple justice, or did she just make a doo-doo mess all over everything?

On my first listen, I had such a frown that it was painful….But, after listening to the song a few times it isn’t terrible. Perhaps my problem is that I keep expecting too much from Taylor Swift. Her vocals just don’t do it for me, I want more power. That being said though, this song is cute. It isn’t the second coming of pop Jesus, but it isn’t dirty brown water trash either.

It is apparent that Swift wrote the song, it has that lyrical je ne sais quoi that she always provides; not a bad thing in this case, it adds to the “wide-eyed optimism” she discussed in her interview. I can definitely feel her optimism and passion for the city, it is endearing. And hearing her discuss it reminds me of my own dreams and plans. You see, I am planning my own grand escape to the city. She discussed the opportunities and the energy that are aplenty in Manhattan, and it was like listening to myself give an interview. I guess I’m biased. Also, remember when Madonna shut down the game?

“Welcome to New York, it’s been waiting for you!…The lights are so bright, but they never blind me”, she cheers, fully aware that the city is a monster that will eat your soul. She ain’t scurred! This is the song that I wanted to hear from her, and as far as the Subsidiary of Hell title, I gotta throw some TSwift hate in here somewhere! She’s just so basic to me… This is pop though and I’m okay with it. So welcome to New York:
